Elle se nommait Fantine.

Pourquoi Fantine? On ne lui avait jamais connu d'autre nom.

GENERAL. No Godmodding should go without saying at this point. I write with anyone, multimuse, OC, canon, as long as the muse is developed and has sufficient information available to me. This should go without saying, but do not take my original content as your own. This includes headcanons and metas.

TRIGGERS. I will always do my best to tag sensitive content, and if I ever miss something feel free to point it out to me, likewise if you would like something to be tagged, you are welcome to drop me a message about it. I would appreciate spiders being tagged due to a phobia, but don’t worry too much about it.

REPLIES & FORMATTING. I don't expect my length to be 100% matched but I do appreciate some attempts to keep it close. I very quickly will drop threads if I write you paragraphs and receive a single line in return. I tend to write multi-para with icons, but I am up for serval different styles! Also if I ever write a reply you can't work with, let me know and I'll edit it!

PERSONAL BLOGS. I am absolutely fine with being followed by personal (non-rp) blogs. You are welcome to like my posts and interact with me. I just ask that you don't reblog anything but gifsets from or things I have specifically marked as okay to reblog. I shall try and tag other posts as not to be reblogged. Anyone who breaks this rule more than once will be softblocked. Thank you very much!

SHIPPING. If our muses have chemistry, I’m up for shipping them. I would prefer some conversation happening before getting into shippy things, even if it’s just a quick message to ask if it’s okay. Once that has been established, go wild.

FOLLOWING. This blog is selective and private, meaning I write exclusively with mutuals. I am 25, and for my own comfort, I would rather keep my mutuals at 18+. However, non-mutuals are welcome to send in asks, or jump into my IMs if you’d like to talk!

SMUT & NSFW. Smut is unlikely to ever be on my blogs as I’m uncomfortable writing it. However other NSFW topics may be written about; I will always do my best to tag these. For Fantine these topics will include: child abandonment, child abuse, domestic abuse, prostitution, police violence etc.

ACTIVITY & CONTACT. I will oftentimes be online even if I’m not actively posting. Mutuals are free to ask for my Discord! I will try my best to answer in a reasonable time frame, but if it has been a while, feel free to poke me for an answer!

DRAMA. For the sake of my own mental health, I will not be getting involved in any drama/discourse that passes my dash. If you want to have a conversation with me about anything, my ask and IMs are always open.

CREDIT. PSD is a mixture of joyriding by ieropsd and sameparts by darkpsds. All other graphics made by me unless otherwise stated.

CANON. Mainly brick-based Fantine, with some quotes taken from the musical.

ABOUT THE MUN. Hi! My name is Holly (she/her) and I'm 25. I've loved Les Mis since I first heard the musical at age 13, and Fantine specifically. I've read her part of the brick many a time and the whole thing in 2021. Originally established in 2015, rebooted in 2021.

history

A little girl left to wander the streets.

A woman fighting for her child.

Fantine has little knowledge of her past, having been abandoned at a young age. A girl of the streets, she learnt slowly to take of herself, devoid of love and affection and seeking it out where she could. Her name is not even truly her own, having been handed to her by a stranger who saw her at the side of the road. At the age of ten, she left the town she had lived in, Montreuil sur Mer, and sought out work in the fields. After spending five years here, at the tender age of fifteen, Fantine went to Paris to earn her fortune. Instead, it was the beginning of the end.

It was in Paris she met Tholomyès, and became to him as one was to a husband. Fantine's love ran deep and true, and she gave herself to him, believing each and every little lie he fed her, following along in her own devoted way. At the age of nineteen, she gave birth to a daughter, an illegitimate daughter.

And at the age of twenty one, she was abandoned by her lover, left at dinner with only a note.

Paris was not kind to a single mother who had lost her skills and work since falling in love. Gathering her daughter, first known as Euphrasie but later Cosette, Fantine left Paris to make her way back to that town of her youth. Her own finery, she sold on, but Cosette she kept dressed well. Cosette was the daughter of a rich man, let the world know it.
But along the way, doubts came to her mind of whether anyone would take her with a child by her side. She could not leave the tot alone all day as she worked either. But spying an inn with two lovely little girls outside, one her own daughter's age had her pleading with the couple who owned it to care for Cosette in her absence. A bargain was made, and a tearful mother left with promises to return as soon as possible.

She would never see her little girl again.

In Montreuil sur Mer, work was found, work that allowed her to establish herself for a little while, with wage enough for both her and her daughter. She paid that couple, and she paid for her room. Until, due to her lack of ability to write, it came to be known that she was hiding a daughter. Fired from her job, seemingly on the wishes of the mayor, Fantine found herself starting to crumble. A lover was taken who only beat her before leaving her alone once more.

She began to take in any and all sewing jobs she could, sharing the task with her neighbour, stitching from dawn until dusk and beyond. She gave up her room and rented a drafty attic instead. When a letter arrived announcing ten francs were needed for a woollen skirt for Cosette for the winter, Fantine had her hair cut off and bought the thing herself. Only, it did not go to her daughter, but to the spoiled child of the Thénadier's. Cosette was being treated like a slave and dressed only in rags. Fantine knew nothing of this.

Money was stretched thin--between her debts and paying for Cosette, little was left for herself. And then her pay for the sewing dipped below what she needed at the same time a letter announcing Cosette was ill. Two napoleons, forty francs, were needed for the medicine. At the same time, a man had arrived in M. sur M., a man who offered two napoleons for the two front teeth, used for making dentures. At first, Fantine scoffed at the idea, before learning more of the illness her daughter was meant to have. Later that evening, she returned to the man and had him remove her teeth.

The money was sent.

Cosette was not ill.

Things became progressively worse, and eventually Fantine had but one avenue left to turn down. In the most desperate final play to keep her child from being turned out into the streets, she sold her body, sold her pride, and became a woman of the night.

As she became more ill and more desperate, an alteration against Bamatabois led to her almost being jailed for six months until an angel shone down upon her. The Mayor himself came to her aid, even after her spitting in his face, and took her to be cared for, sent for her child to be fetched. But by that point, it was all too late for Fantine. When Javert arrived to arrest Valjean, she was certain he was back for her and her heart gave out, still believing her child was only a day away.

Now, all she can do is watch over her child in some imitation of a guardian angel, and occasionally visit her in Cosette's dreams. Not a day went by in which Cosette's mother did not love her with all her heart, the little girl who had been her reason for living for so long.

canon

SHE WAS CALLED FANTINE. Orphaned before she could ever know her parents, Fantine roamed the streets as a small child, getting her name from a passerby who had liked it. At the age of ten she went to work for some farmers before leaving to make her fortune in Paris at fifteen. By the age of sixteen, she was working in a fine dress shop in Paris until finally leaving once she met Félix.

A SUMMER BY MY SIDE. For more than two years Félix Tholomyes remained with his young love. The pair had a child together, the light of Fantine’s life. But he, and the other students who had been having affairs with three other girls, left them behind after dinner, never to be heard from again.

DREAMS THAT CANNOT BE. After being abandoned, Fantine packs up her belongings, sells off her finery and plans to return to her hometown in hopes of getting a job. Her one pride remains her daughter, Cosette, whom she still dresses in lace and velvet.

INNOCENT SISTER. Upon her return to Montreuil-sur-Mer, having left her child in the care of the Thénardiers, Fantine manages to get a job at a local factory, and for a while, this works out well. She has enough to send to pay for her child and to keep for herself.

THEN IT ALL WENT WRONG. Her child discovered Fantine was dismissed from the factory. She turns to her old work of sewing, creating shirts for prisoners, working long and tiring hours. Eventually she sells her own hair in order to afford a winter skirt for Cosette. She also sells her two front teeth to raise more money.

ONE ALREADY DEAD. Left with no other choice, and Cosette still needing her, Fantine turns to prostitution as a last resort. This eventually leads to her becoming sick, and after an encounter with a vile man called Bamatabois, she is nearly arrested. Her saviour comes in the form of the man who she believed didn’t listen to her when she was fired from the factory. Taken to the hospital, she eventually dies of shock upon seeing Inspector Javert, believing he had returned to arrest her.

A BREATH OF PARIS PRESERVES THE SOUL. Fantine never leaves Paris with Cosette. She lives obscurity among thousands of others with secrets of their own. Together, she and her daughter are their own little family.
